Under the guise of combating female genital mutilation (FGM), the true objective of the Maputo Protocol is the legalisation of abortion throughout Africa. Pope Benedict XVI has called it 'an attempt to trivialize abortion surreptitiously.' The Catholic bishops of Africa oppose the Maputo Protocol because it defines abortion as a human right.
